It’s hard to say if you have ever run across anyone who’s ever founded a franchising company, but perhaps you have. There aren’t many really, in the last few decades there have been less than 8000, and of those founding franchisor’s only one in five ever made it past five years and franchising. Therefore, it is a very elite and small group of people. Indeed, I consider them the elite of the business world because of the vast knowledge they must have to participate in the world of franchising.
Interestingly enough, before retirement I was a franchise company founder for over a decade, and every once in a while someone would ask me how come I was so sure of myself or even arrogant. Indeed, every small business person who succeeds has to be sure of themselves because they have to make decisions on a daily bases which will affect the future outcome of their company and their products.
If these small business entrepreneurs make mistakes, they won’t make a profit and they will be out of business. Now then imagine a franchisor founder who runs his company for five, 10, or even 15 years before they franchise. They are a successful long-term small business person, and as we know 75% of all small businesses go out of business in the first five years. Next, they have franchised their business and they have set up their perfect business models in many states and countries.
You cannot run a franchising company without being sure of yourself, and if that appears to some to be arrogant, that’s just too bad. The reality is that only the best of the best are able to compete in the business world of franchising. There is too much information and experience they must know, and they have to be ultra-vigilant and observant to stay on top of the ever-changing game in business.
If there was ever such an individual that would have an extreme amount of self-confidence it would be a franchising founder. If you think you are going to teach a franchise founder something that they don’t know in the world of business, you better study pretty hard, you better have your facts straight, and you better get up pretty early in the morning.
By the way, there’s nothing wrong with being a little arrogance, if you know your abilities, skills and ability to kick ass in the marketplace and take no prisoners. If you can handle that, you have no business talking to an individual like this. Survival, and winning at that level takes abilities that few humans possess. Perhaps, that’s why there are today only about 1800 companies in the United States that are actively franchising. And of those only 50% of them are still being run by the franchise founder’s that started them. Please consider all this.
