Recession Sparks New Franchise Business

Economic conditions

The British Bankers’ Association (BBA) figures for “small businesses establishing new banking relationships” show 142,500 in the first quarter of 2009. The same period last year saw these figures at 142,700. In the light of the current recession, these statistics are seen to be highly encouraging.

BBA figures also show a 5% rise in lending to small businesses in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2008.

Managing Director of Barclays Local Business, Steve Cooper has commented that Barclays are seeing the start-up sector being more resilient than they thought it would be.

These figures are a good guide to the level of start-up business activity in the UK and they give encouraging signs in the midst of the current economic environment.
